THE LAST FLIGHT OF
THE HELDERBERG

In 1987 South Africa was under siege. International trade and economic sanctions, border terrorist incursions, war with Russian backed Cuban and Angolan armies, internal unrest and violence and the advent of "people power" in the form of massive labour strikes that were crippling major mining and manufacturing industries.

South Africa desperately required sophisticated weaponry to survive. What little that could be sourced was transported in the hold of SAA commercial airliners. It is probable that such cargo aboard the Boeing 747 Combi Aircraft named "Helderberg" contained volatile chemicals which ignited mid-flight, destroyed vital controls and caused the fatal crash that took the lives of 159 passengers and crew.
